How to claim a rebate on a solar hot water system

If you are thinking of installing a solar or heat-pump hot water system don't forget the federal government might be able to chip in.

Under the Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme - Solar Hot Water Rebate (REBS), eligible households can claim a rebate of $1000 for a solar hot water system or $600 for a heat-pump hot water system.

To be eligible for the REBS:

  • The system must replace an existing electric storage hot water system.
  • The dwelling must be a principal place of residence.
  • The solar or heat-pump hot water system should be eligible for at least 20 small-scale technology certificates (STCs). The retailer should be able to tell you the number of STCs.
  • The system must be installed and certified by a suitably qualified person.

You can only apply after the system is installed, attaching a copy of your purchase receipts.

You have to lodge your application within 122 days of installation. Processing takes about eight weeks.

For more information go to climatechange.gov.au/solarhotwater or call 1800 808 571. You might also be eligible for state rebates.
